It is now very easy for us to exactly calculate how many resources we need for what amount of time. This helps contain costs, save on training, by reusing resources by staggering the schedule – all in one

RESOURCE MANAGER

SOFTWARE AND PROCESSES FOR
RESOURCE PLANNING AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

What is your challenge as you see it?

”We want to engage the right kind of resources at the right time, for the right amount of time, for the right kind of job. As an R&D Resource Manager, my challenges are that of balancing and leveling against demand fluctuations. When new projects have to be launched, and brought into stream, we do not want to be seen as the bottleneck, dragging out the time to market. The second challenge is resource mix – how much reliance can we place on contracted resources versus our core in-house talent pool, against the criticality of the project.”

What solutions do you have today?

”Today, we manually compile the resource requirements from different projects and try to group them into resource categories. This gets revised once every week. On the other hand, we get a resource utilization report, from the Managers. This gives us an idea of who is doing what, for how long a time, and when would a resource become free to take on the next project. We meet and manually compare, mix and match to provide the resources required for every project.

In theory, this process works very well, but the level accuracy is questionable, and the fluctuations are unmanageable. Plus, the resources have to be shuffled around, only to find out that they have pending obligations from their prior assignments.”

What exactly do you need and why is different?

You need to get a clear idea of what is coming down the pike, with respect to resource requirements. Ad hoc resource requirements are to be presented on a time horizon, where the closer the timeframe, the more accurate the prediction is. This has to be clearly superimposed on resource availability, both in-house and contracted.

This will enable you to pick and chose resources you need in advance and lock in on the resources for the right kind of job. You need OpenMetrik Resource Manager as part of your integrated R&D Governance solution.
